Karanda Mission Hospital
February 19, 2026
Dear Friends,
Warm greetings from Zimbabwe.
Karanda has another amazing opportunity for a matching grant with our partners at Southwestern Medical Clinic Foundation (SWMCF). Our first fundraising effort together in 2021 purchased a lifegiving Oxygen Generating Station. The second successful effort in 2022 acquired a heavy-duty service vehicle, for our community care activities. In 2024, we were blessed by the completion of our new Rehabilitation Unit, and in 2025 we furnished our new Maternity Ward (pictured below), sponsored once again by SWMCF. In 2026, we are again delighted to announce that SWMCF is offering a Matching Gift Program of up to $7,500 to help renovate the Antenatal Waiting Shelter.
Karanda Mission Hospital is a 156-bed district hospital serving a population of 250,000 people in rural northeastern Zimbabwe, and the nation at large. We had nearly 140,000 patients visit for medical care and treatment in 2025. Last year, we had a total of 3,646 ANC Visits, and our maternity reached a total of 2,025 deliveries. We are in desperate need of renovating our Antenatal Waiting Shelter. The current waiting shelter was constructed in the 1980’s and dilapidated; discouraging women from seeking institutional care. It accommodates women for expectant mothers travelling from our remote villages and addresses the “second delay”—the time taken to reach a facility once labor begins—by ensuring women are already on-site.
The renovation will consist of the following components:
– Structural repairs to replace ceiling boards, roofing, and fresh paint.
– Sustainable energy with solar lighting and power
– New communal cooking area and bathrooms
– Provision of beds and mosquito nets to prevent malaria
TOTAL ESTIMATED COST OF RENOVATION – $22,500 USD
Dr. Roland Stephens, missionary surgeon with Southwestern Medical Clinic, was one of the founders of Karanda Mission Hospital in 1961. He and his team of missionary coworkers and national health care professionals established and exemplified a level of health care that is much sought after by Zimbabweans to this day. In keeping with the memory of Dr. Stephens, the Southwestern Medical Clinic Foundation (www.swmcf.org) is partnering with us to raise $22,500 using a 1:2 matching grant formula of up to $7,500. The funds raised will go a great distance in saving mothers and infants in our community.
The health and wellbeing of Zimbabweans is vitally important to us. Our ministry at Karanda provides holistic care, in body, mind and spirit, to an underprivileged corner of the world. Thank you for coming alongside our ministry in this time of great need to raise funds to expand our maternity care. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
