Tenwek Hospital
January 30, 2026
Friends,
Hello from Tenwek Hospital, Kenya. I trust that this message finds you well.
First, we have noticed that without a full time ER physician here, we are lacking someone to really steer the ship in terms of teaching basic and advanced life support. While we pray for someone to be called to Tenwek, we also see this as an opportunity to create and train the trainers’ model in all the departments. We would like to have 3-4 people from each department undergo a BLS (basic life support) and ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) course. There is a group that will come to Tenwek to teach this for 15,000 Ksh ($115) per student. We would then create a teaching system for those who attended the course to teach their departments. We would need about $4,000 – $5,000 to do this for all the departments. Members of the critical care departments would attend and take over teaching this going forward, but I believe the expertise of an outside group would be valuable.
Second, maternity has many items that are broken. I’ve used as much glue and tape as I possibly can, and it just won’t work anymore. This includes stretchers, blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, and other day-to-day equipment that needs to be replaced. We have had great success with our laparoscopy program and have served many patients with this advanced technology. Now we need to make sure that post operatively we equip our recovery spaces with safe ways to monitor and take care of these mothers.
Tenwek Hospital has an opportunity to partner with Southwestern Medical Clinic Foundation to raise these needed funds. Southwestern Medical Clinic Foundation is graciously offering a Matching Gift campaign of up to $5,000 for the training and maternity equipment.
Thank you so much for your consideration of these projects which are near and dear to the OB department at Tenwek.
